FaZe have opened their Roman Imperium Cup IX campaign with a 2-1 win over Sangal in the upper bracket quarter-finals. The series came close to an upset. As Dust2.us reports, the top-seeded side needed late-round multi-kills from Russell “Twistzz” Van Dulken and Jakub “jcobbb” Pietruszewski to get through the Cache decider.

The two teams arrived by very different routes. FaZe went straight into the playoffs as the event’s number one seed, so this was their first match of the tournament. Sangal had to earn their place, coming through the group stage and then a play-in match to reach the bracket.

FaZe chose Dust2 as the opener and made a 3-0 start. Sangal found their footing from there and finished their CT half 7-5 up. Neither side could close the map out in regulation, and it went to overtime. Sangal took it 16-13, winning FaZe’s own pick and moving 1-0 up in the series.

Nuke was Sangal’s choice, and FaZe answered quickly. They took an 8-4 lead from the defensive half, which is usually the stronger side on that map. Dust2.us credits Twistzz’s calling as IGL for a composed T-side that kept Sangal at a distance. FaZe won the map 13-7 to level the series, so each team had now lost its own pick.

The deciding map on Cache began much like Nuke. FaZe were 8-4 up after their CT half. Sangal clawed back to 8-8, putting the quarter-final back on a knife edge with an elimination from the upper bracket in play. Twistzz then turned things round on a Tec-9 buy, taking four kills in the round to steady his side.

With FaZe 11-8 ahead, jcobbb produced the defining moment of the series. The Polish rifler aced Sangal, closing out a 1v2 clutch in the process, and that round left FaZe on the brink of the map. They saw out the remaining rounds to finish the series.

The result keeps FaZe on the upper side of the bracket at Roman Imperium Cup IX. It was a nervier start than the top seed would have wanted. For Sangal, the play-in route ends with a defeat that took them to overtime on one map and to 8-8 on the decider. They had taken the top seeds the full distance in the series.
