Linus Torvalds is using AI to develop Linux kernel code now
The move is a turning point in the developer’s relationship with AI and Linux.

It had to happen. Linus Torvalds announced to the world that he used AI to write code for the Linux kernel. Who’d thought it? Well, me for one. Over the last few years, I’ve seen Torvalds’ attitude change from skeptical to seeing AI as a useful tool for programmers and maintainers.
In his Git submission , he wrote, “The code, the test programs, the review behind the list above and the first draft of this text were done with an LLM coding assistant (Claude Code) under my direction.”
