Just one day ago Hurricane Isaias was a Category 1 hurricane. Overnight, it ballooned into a major Category 3 storm with 120-mile-per-hour winds and is set to slam into the U.S. Gulf Coast Friday evening with “life-threatening storm surge,” “devastating winds” and the potential for tornadoes, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

So how did this storm get so dangerous so quickly?
