Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher will not be made bankrupt after settling an unpaid tax bill with HM Revenue and Customs.
Judge Nicholas Briggs dismissed a bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday after being told the debt had been paid. The petition was brought in August, but Kevin Hassan from HMRC, told the hearing in London that the outstanding amount had been settled.
The bankruptcy petition concerned an unpaid tax bill owed to HMRC. Bankruptcy proceedings can be brought against individuals over unpaid debts, although a petition does not itself mean that a person has been declared bankrupt, it begins the proceedings for a judge to make the decision.
In Carragher's case, the court was told that the debt had been paid before the hearing concluded. Judge Briggs subsequently dismissed the petition, meaning he will not be made bankrupt as a result of the proceedings.
No further details about the tax bill, including its value or the circumstances behind the original debt, were disclosed during the hearing.
