The Golden Horde beat GenOne 2-1 in the fourth quarter-final of the PGL Bucharest Open Qualifier #1 2027 on Monday 12 October, taking maps one and three to claim the last place in the playoff semi-finals.
On paper it was an upset. GenOne arrived 66th in the Elo power rankings with a rating of 1688 and a 91-62 record across 153 rated matches. The Golden Horde do not appear in the rankings at all. That gap meant little over three maps.
The Golden Horde won map one, the longest of the series at 54 minutes. GenOne answered on map two, levelling at 1-1 after 49 minutes. The decider was the shortest map of the three. The Golden Horde closed it out in 44 minutes.
Close series are familiar ground for this side. Their recent run in CCT Europe Contenders #9 2026 featured three best-of-threes that all went to a third map: wins over pivstar and gothboiclique, then a 1-2 defeat to TitanFlow. In Bucharest they reached the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win over Inner Circle Academy in the round of 16.
For the French-based org, the defeat ends a mixed spell. GenOne opened this qualifier with a 1-0 win over los kogutos in round of 16 match 7, but their form before Bucharest swung both ways. At Leon.bet Masters Season 1 2026 they swept FaZe Up Next 2-0 and then lost 1-2 to Infinite. In Circuito Retake Season 12 2026 they edged SAW Youngsters 2-1 after a 0-2 loss to Eternal Fire.
Monday’s result means GenOne have now lost two of their last three best-of-three series by a 1-2 scoreline. Each time they took a map and could not find the second.
Reward for the upset was a semi-final against ex-RUSTEC, who had swept Nordic Partners Gaming 2-0 in quarter-final 3. The Golden Horde could not repeat the trick. ex-RUSTEC won semi-final 2 by 2-0.
On the other side of the bracket, Nuclear TigeRES had beaten XI Esport 2-0 in quarter-final 1 and Johnny Speeds 2-0 in semi-final 1, reaching the grand final without dropping a map in either series. That clean run stopped there: ex-RUSTEC won the grand final 2-1 to take PGL Bucharest Open Qualifier #1 2027.
For The Golden Horde, the qualifier finishes with a semi-final place and a scalp of the 66th-ranked team in the world, a decent return for a side yet to appear in the rankings.
